Audience: Advanced English language learners Level: B2/C1 (Advanced)
Objective: The objective of this lesson is to develop student’s abilities to compare and contrast the way different news sources present the same information. This activity is based on multimodal literacy and aims to enhance reading skills by shaping meaning and interpretation which could be potentially beneficial for readers.
TASK: Teacher will provide students with links of two news articles from different sources covering the same event. These articles contain a mix of audiovisual aids. The activity can be done individually or in pairs.
Materials: Articles ‘Chaos has gone’ - quiet streets on Texas border after Trump crackdown How federal agencies’ roles have shifted in Trump’s immigration battle | CNN
Step #1: Students will analyze the articles focusing on:
Central message of the articles Audiovisual aids and their contribution to the message Differences between both articles (e.g., they emphasize different aspects, use different perspectives, are presented differently) Based on all of the above: Which of the two articles do you think can impact the audience more?
Write down your answers for the following steps.
Step #2: Discuss. Either done individually or in pairs students will discuss their opinions on the activity and its content. (10 min)
Step #3: Write down in the following link the answers of step #1 and comment about how you think these kinds of activities can be beneficial for language learners in lower levels. https://padlet.com/palomanavarrete3/comparing-news-covering-idvz5d1lmujdx13i
(Juan José) Task done. I like your model, given that your task asks students to analyze not only the written content but also audiovisual elements, so it is not just reading one text, is undertant two differents ones and try to compare them to notice what is the intention behind them, and the discussion even if i did not do it with another one, just with myself or the voices, it helps to undertant the readings a lot. Finally, as a multimodal text, I found it complete. If I am not mistaken, this relates to the idea of multimodality as meaning-making. I feel that it includes every aspect I could think of including.
Task done! I liked your activity, is well-planned and effective because it uses multimodal texts to promote critical thinking. Students analyze not only the words but also the visuals and how they shape the message, which introduces them to media framing and influence. Moving from analysis to discussion, is also great, this can help learners practice comparison, synthesis, and argumentation in a meaningful way.
