LIDIA

 Level: A2 - B1

Skill: Writing

Topic: Superlatives

Objective: Students will be able to use superlative adjectives to compare more than two things and to talk about extremes

Hello guys! For today we have an activity to practice the use of supertlatives with some simple adjectives to compare nouns. We are going to start with some of the basic rules:

1. For the first activity we are going to work with an interactive video, so please click on the link and play the video, questions should pop-up while you are watching it. Pay attention to the superlatives that appear on the video.

2. Create a sentence for each superlative that has been shown on the video and write them on the comment section.

3. Let's practice your knowledge on the topic with the following game, please click on the following link:

4. For the final activity, let us know about your favourite city, using superlatives to describe it (At least 5 lines).

I hope you enjoy these exercises. Thanks for doing them. See you on class.

Hello Lidia, I made your activity. I think the plattform you proposed is very interesting, I’ve never used something like this before. I had fun and felt excited to find the final result. Now, I will give you my impressions related to the multimodal task:

Even if the steps were clear and it could be an activity to use in a children's class, as you proposed, It was missing the objective and the skill emphasis wasn’t clear to me. From my experience, I could guess the focus was on reading, since the process of meaning construction was what made it fun. However, for it to be understandable I think children should have already developed the meta-interpretative strategies. That means, if they are not able to go beyond literal meaning and differentiate that the sentences that the generator shows are grammatically correct but lack real meaning in social situations, the activity could be confusing.

Of course, it was my interpretation based on what I thought was the skill focus, let me know if it was something different. Finally, I paste the link to the song the generator made for me. Thank you for your proposal.

    Hi Lydia

I think the activity is very engaging, interesting and fun. It is a nice way to practice vocabulary, but I think there was not a clear topic or skill to practice. I think it could work as a warm up. But, you should include another activity like asking students to sing the song so they can practice pronunciation. I recommend you to present the activity and instructions in a different way since it is planned for children. Finally, it was a very creative and different activity that with the right focus and something else to reinforce it would be great.

  3. Hi Lidia,
I think I said it in class. Lessons that are titled with grammatical topics are not enticing. Ideally, we should put these topics in the contexts of topics such as comparing cities in the world or what is the best athlete? etc. We need to depart from meanings and involve grammar, not to depart from grammar. I think using videos and a game contribute to the lesson, but it should not only be to practice grammar. explore meanings!! The idea of Natalia above about songs could enrich the lesson, but most importantly is to think how through a topic that is meaningful students can approach grammar functions. One more thing about design, make links clickable. What is more create hyperlinks so you don't have to paste complete links on the assignment. So, these could be good activities but go beyond the idea of only practicing grammar. The last activity instead of writing you could ask them to design a poster of the city they love or would live to visit and explain why it is better than other ones.
