Present continuous with an image and a shortfilm
This activity is intended for kids and teenagers with a low-intermediate english level. The main purpose of this activity is to practice the present continuous tense using audiovisual resources such as an image and a shortfilm.
Little reminder:
Although the present continuous has a lot of uses today we are going to focus on actions that are happening at the moment. Remember guys that present continuous sturctures are:
Affirmative: Subject + verb to be + verb(ing) + complement.
Negative: Subject + verb to be + not + verb(ing) + complement.
Questions: Verb to be + subject + verb(ing) + complement ?
Examples:
Juanita and Andres are singing a new song.
Juanita and Andres are not singing a new song.
Are Juanita and Andres singing a new song?

Comment:
I think that the activity for the chosen level is well developed and complete when it comes to a kid/teenager. The first part -making sentences according to the image- was a good warmth up to the next activity. Nonetheless, I felt that another platform could have been use to the writing in order to make perhaps a collaborative work. I believe is a good way to mix written and visual modes of communication.
I enjoyed a lot the second exercise. I think was a very well chosen video, and very appealing for younger audiences. To improve, I think it is necessary that the questions appear at the moment that the action is developing in the video, given that at times it was difficult not to get confused of what specific part of the video the question was referring. This was a fun activity where I was able to combine a lot of modes of communication: oral, written, visual, audio, and gestural, that were result of the plot of the short film, and the actions performed for the characters that communicated meaning through the previously mentioned modes.
Hello there Sofia, first I want to say is that you had really good sentences and an almost perfect score in the second activity, I agree with you on the use of another platform on the writing part, they seem to be like two different acitivities, I will take it into account.
ReplyDeleteConcerning the second comment, that was the idea at first, that the video was paused when the questions came up, but I couldn't do it haha, I didn't know how to do it. :(
Sentences:
ReplyDelete1. The woman is riding a bike with her daughter.
2. Carlos is passing across Tatiana's house.
3. Ana and Juan are dancing.
4. They are sitting on a bench.
5. That man is playing the saxophone.
- On the video activity I got 9 out of 11.

I think this plan is good for the level that you chose, which is low-intermediate. The instructions are very clear.
The first activity is good, it made a good transition to the main activity. The main activity was very entertaining and having to answer the questions while the video was running made me concentrate more. The only thing that I think could improve, is that in the last question, I didn´t know at which exact moment he was smiling or not, I think the end of the video was too long just for one question.
In conclusion, it IS a really good multimodal activity,
Sentences:
ReplyDeleteCamila is riding her motorcycle
Sebastian and Julia are dancing
Mariano is playing the saxophone
John is walking alone
Rebecca is riding a bike with her niece

In my opinion, the class activity in general was good. I really like the first activity about the picture and the sentences because you have to analyze the picture, which is better than just looking at a bunch of sentences, and the activity about the video was really entertaining because you have to pay constant attention to the video in order to answer the questions; also, the story of the video was really cute. The only suggestion that I would give you is that in some parts I got confused with the questions because some questions were different from the things I was seeing in the video. It was a really good and useful multimodal activity because it made you really attentive to the material.
Sentences:
ReplyDeleteSofía is riding a motorcycle
Jenna is driving a bike with her daughter
Mario and Lucia are dancing
Oscar is playing the saxophone

I got 11/11
I think the activity was really interesting and engaging, the sentences with the image work very well as a warm up and the activity with the short film helps you put into practice the topic and the ability to deduce what's going on and relate it with the questions and the options. Also it is good for the level you choose.

ReplyDeleteHi Jotam,
ReplyDeleteI like that you used a video which is attractive for students. I am not very keen on lessons that focus only on grammar and less on meanings. For example, you could focus on what happens in the video from another perspective You have two multimodal activities which is good, but focus more on meaning rather than form only.
